In a nutshell, Disneyland is the OG park on the West Coast, while Disney World is the massive resort destination in Florida. Both have rides, Dole Whips, and plenty of the magic we all love. But the size, atmosphere, and planning process couldn’t be more different.

How many parks are we talking about?
Disneyland is your straightforward option: two parks, no fuss. Between the original Disneyland park and its sister, Disney California Adventure, you’ve got everything from nostalgic classics and familiar characters to thrills and everything in between. The snack game is strong, and the vibes are even stronger.
It’s all very compact and walkable, with Downtown Disney also a stone’s throw away. With a smaller footprint, Disneyland is very manageable, but don’t let the size fool you – there’s still plenty here to keep you busy and having fun!
At Disney World, you’ve got four parks (and two water parks, but for simplicity’s sake, let’s stick with the basics) to choose from.
- Magic Kingdom (the quintessential “Disney” park with castles, characters, and classics)
- EPCOT (part futuristic, part trip ‘round the world with festivals, food, and culture)
- Hollywood Studios (home to blockbusters and thrills)
- Animal Kingdom (known for jaw-dropping animal encounters and the breathtaking world of Pandora)
Bigger, busier, and bursting with variety, Disney World is its own universe. There’s something here for every fan! Just know that with all that space and choice comes a higher level of planning, but it’s worth it.
Where to stay and what to consider
Due to its sheer size and its own convenient, free on-site transportation system, staying on property at Disney World directly impacts the ease of your visit. You’ll have easy access to that transportation, shorter transit times, and enjoy the comfort of being in the “Disney bubble,” which is in the middle of all the action.
Disneyland has a smaller, more easily walkable footprint, with both parks and Downtown Disney steps apart. Plus, there are dozens of hotel and motel options in the immediate vicinity of the parks, so staying “on property” is not necessary to a successful visit (our team rarely does!). The flexibility to stay off-site without missing out on anything is one of the park’s biggest conveniences.
The Weather Factor: Sunshine & Humidity
If the weather is a factor for you, listen up. The subtropical climate at Disney World is vastly different from the sunny skies of Southern California, and it can have a big impact on how you plan your time in the parks.
Summer in Florida is typically hot, rainy, and humid. Packing for rain, hydrating, and taking breaks are essential to a successful visit. By contrast, the weather at Disneyland is generally temperate, with dry and sunny conditions year-round, making park exploration much easier to plan for.
Comparing the attractions
Regardless of whether you’re a Disney World veteran or a Disneyland regular, the attractions at each of the parks are a treat. Sure, some attractions do overlap, but there are often subtle – and sometimes striking – differences that Disney fans will have fun discovering. Pirates of the Caribbean? Unique experiences on each coast. Space Mountain? Different vibes, albeit a similar concept. We don’t want to spoil the differences, though. Finding out is half the fun!
Beyond the similarities, Disneyland and Disney World each have their own exclusives that make them exciting. Unique to the Disneyland parks, for one, are rides like the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, as well as areas like Toon Town and Pixar Pier. Lovers of Disney lore will also appreciate the history and Walt Disney’s original attractions. Disney World is home to its own unique attractions, like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and areas like Toy Story Land and Pandora.
Wherever you decide to go, even repeat visitors will find plenty of surprises that make every trip to the parks feel fresh and exciting.
